The Magdalen and Lasher Educational Foundation

The Magdalen and Lasher Educational Foundation was established in 1877/78 as a result of the Charity Commission's intervention into the already established "Magdalen and Lasher Charity". It divided the Charity into three sections and created the independent "Educational Foundation".

The aim of the Foundation was to improve educational standards by giving financial support to the newly formed Hastings Grammar School Foundation. which had been formed in 1877 to administer bequests made by the Rev. William Parker and James Saunders; two former Hastings benefactors.

At present the Magdalen and Lasher Educational Foundation annually invites all state schools in Hastings to make applications for major (£3,000+) or minor (up to £3,000) grants towards the cost of undertaking projects and activities for the educational benefit of students. In 2010 six schools were awarded a total of £69,500 for major grant projects with a further 14 grants awarded for minor projects.

The Foundation also awards up to 25 bursaries of £1,000 each to students who have won undergraduate places at universities as well as assisting individual students with course fees and related expenses.
